OUR FERRIES. OUR MONEY. THEIR JOBS.
BC Ferries just handed a half-billion-dollars in public money to a state-owned shipyard in China while welders, riggers, apprentices and steelworkers here sit on the sidelines.
We’ve got the skills. We’ve got the yards. But instead of building vessels here, our tax dollars are being used to send jobs to workers in another country.
They say it’s cheaper. They say it’s faster. They say no one in Canada bid. But here’s what they don’t say:
This isn’t just about ferries.
It’s about whether public money should create good jobs here or be used to prop up foreign economies. It’s about a generation of young workers being told there’s no place for them in B.C.’s future.
We’re sick of watching contracts, paycheques and pride go overseas while we’re told to wait for trickle-down scraps.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
It’s not too late to fight back.
Let’s stand up for good jobs, stronger communities and a ferry system we can count on.
Offshore builds may look cheaper on paper, but they cost us billions in lost wages, tax revenue and economic opportunity.
Tell your MLA and MP: build our ferries here, not there.
Yes, and that’s part of the problem. Canada has the skills and shipyards to build ferries, but BC Ferries designed a process that made it almost impossible for local yards to compete. Tight timelines, lack of provincial coordination and a focus on the lowest cost meant Canadian shipyards were shut out before they could even try.
This isn’t about capability. It’s about choices. With real leadership, we can fix this, and bring ferry building back home.
Maybe in the short term. But the real cost is much higher. Every contract sent offshore means fewer good jobs here at home, less investment in local industry and more public money leaving the country. Building in Canada supports skilled trades, strengthens our economy and keeps our shipbuilding capacity alive for future generations.
The contract is signed, but this isn’t over. BC Ferries plans to build more vessels in the coming years, and there’s still time to influence decisions. We’re calling on the province to pause, step in, fix the system and commit to building ships right here in Canada.
The Heat & Frost Insulators and the affiliates in the BC Building Trades have set the standard for quality in ship building in B.C. for decades.
Through our red seal training programs, we have the resources and experience to provide the best skilled workforce in B.C. for now and into the future.

The future of civilian shipbuilding in B.C. is at stake. We have a generational opportunity to save it by supporting our shipyards, investing in long-term planning and sequencing projects to maximize our facilities and the jobs we can create. It all must start now or this moment will pass us by.
BRYNN BOURKE
BC Building Trades
When we build ships in B.C., we invest in B.C. workers and communities, strengthen our economy and build for the future.
Now more than ever, let's keep that money at work in our province.
